The S.A.M Difference

At S.A.M, we believe every child can be great at math if they understand it.

Unlike other math enrichment programs, we teach children to understand what math concepts really mean, so that computations are no longer a jumble of numbers and symbols; they hold meaning and dictate numerical relationships. By developing students’ critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, we equip them with the tools to tackle math with total confidence.

What S.A.M centers teach

  • Thinking math that emphasizes problem solving, conceptual learning before procedural learning

  • Fun, hands-on activities using the CPA approach
  • Worksheet reinforcement with variation
  • Explicit teaching of problem-solving heuristics and process

  • Coaching approach to facilitate understanding

What most other centers teach

  • Traditional math that emphasizes procedural learning, memorization and repetition

  • Drill and practice

  • Tell and give knowledge to student

The S.A.M thinking math program complements Singapore schools' curriculum with a two-pillared approach of hands-on classroom engagement and comprehensive worksheet reinforcement to develop interest and mastery in math.

Classroom Engagement

Research has shown that children aged 12 and below learn better when they have close adult supervision and tactile activities. This is why we have designed our class size to be small and trainers have one-on-one time with each child.

We use the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to help students understand an abstract subject such as math.
  • Concrete stage is the “doing” stage where children use physical objects such as manipulatives.
  • Pictorial stage is the “seeing” stage where children use drawings or pictures.
  • Abstract stage is the “symbolic” stage where children use abstract symbols to represent math.

Worksheet Reinforcement

Created by a team of former Singapore school teachers and textbook publishers, S.A.M worksheets’ tasks are comprehensive, varied and incrementally advanced, so that learning is kept challenging yet achievable, to keep children motivated.

Through guided practice in class and independent practice at home, children develop mastery in math, problem-solving and thinking skills, self-discipline and good study habits.

Personalised Learning Plan

We use a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to pinpoint the topics a child has mastered and the topics the child needs more support with. Then, we prescribed a personalized learning plan tailored to each child at their own skill level and pace, because no two children learn alike.

In addition, we use the coaching approach with probing questions and a lot of encouragement to help students explore, discover and build confidence towards math.

Global Footprint

Seriously Addictive Learning was founded in 2010 by Samuel Chia and Lau Chin Loong in Singapore. Recognizing the challenges faced by children in school systems with large class sizes and a one-size-fits-all approach, they ideated a learning program to help children learn math better, where the proven Singapore Math curriculum is delivered through personalised learning in small class size.

After 3 years of research and development and a successful 2013 launch of the math program in Singapore, Seriously Addictive Learning expanded rapidly into international markets, winning multiple business awards and parenting awards in various countries. Seriously Addictive Learning now offers the S.A.M Thinking Math program and the S.A.E Phonics and English program in more than 200 centers in 20 countries and counting.

Success Stories

“I sent my pre-school boys to S.A.M to prepare them for primary 1 and I am not disappointed at all! S.A.M trainers do not rush my children to learn big numbers or calculations without first understanding and grasping math concepts suitable for their age. Now, my children are very comfortable with number bonds, problem sums and how to present their answers. I do not need to worry about them not being able to adapt to learning math in P1.”

– Mrs Lim, mother of Nathan and Nigel

"Beverly was good in math in P1 but P2 was a steep learning curve for her because of multiple-step word problems especially model drawings. S.A.M trainers taught her how to analyze word problems systematically, draw the correct models or use other methods to accurately solve word problems. She got perfect scores for her recent math tests and she is in love with math all over again!"

– Mrs Kelly, mother of Beverly

"Charlaine is being taught higher levels of math for her age in S.A.M as she has no issues with the pace of math in school. She enjoys the fun lessons at S.A.M and their heuristics lessons have honed her thinking skills. She can analyze and solve word problems and present her answers in a concise manner. I am very impressed that my P2 child can solve tricky math questions without the need to memorize anything. The ability to understand how math works is very valuable and S.A.M has helped her to develop this skill."

– Mrs Elaine, mother of Charlaine

“Jaydon was struggling with math in P4 and was reluctant to do math problems. S.A.M trainers take the time to help him understand and fully grasp each topic before getting him to attempt questions in increasing levels of difficulty. The dedication and passion of S.A.M trainers are unparalleled. My child has developed confidence and passion for math. It’s now his favourite subject!”

– Mrs Janice, mother of Jaydon
